Root Canal Treatment

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a procedure used to treat infections in the soft pulp inside a tooth. This treatment can save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted due to damage, decay, or infection. The goal is to remove the infected tissue, clean and disinfect the tooth's interior, and seal it to prevent further infection. Root canal treatment is often necessary when the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or trauma.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal:

  • Severe toothache when chewing or applying pressure.
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the source is removed.
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth.
  • Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums.

Root canal treatment is a safe and effective way to relieve pain, save your natural tooth, and prevent the spread of infection. Modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure relatively comfortable, with a high success rate.

How it works?

1- Diagnosis and Preparation

After a thorough examination, including X-rays, your dentist will diagnose the extent of the infection. Local anesthesia will be administered to numb the affected tooth and surrounding tissue.

2- Cleaning and Shaping the Root Canal

The dentist will make a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected pulp is removed, and the root canal is carefully cleaned, disinfected, and shaped for filling.

3- Sealing the Tooth

Once the canal is clean and shaped, it is filled with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha. The tooth is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling to prevent reinfection.

4- Restoration

After root canal treatment, the tooth may need a crown to restore its strength and function. Your dentist will make sure the tooth is fully protected and can withstand biting forces.
