Dental Periodontics

What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease. It also involves the placement and maintenance of dental implants and addressing gum and bone health. Periodontal disease, if untreated, can lead to tooth loss and other health issues. Periodontal treatments aim to stop the progression of gum disease, protect your teeth and supporting structures, and improve overall oral health. This can include procedures ranging from deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to surgical treatments like gum grafts or flap surgery.

    Common Periodontal Treatments:

  • Scaling and Root Planing - A deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smoothens root surfaces.
  • Gum Grafts - Used to cover exposed roots and protect them from decay or further recession.
  • Flap Surgery - A surgical procedure where the gums are lifted back to remove tartar buildup and reduce the depth of gum pockets.

Periodontics plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of your gums and teeth, especially for patients at risk for or suffering from gum disease. Regular checkups with a periodontist can help prevent serious complications.

How it works?

1- Diagnosis of Gum Disease

Your periodontist will assess the health of your gums, checking for signs of gum recession, inflammation, and pocket depth around the teeth. X-rays may be used to determine the extent of bone loss.

2- Initial Treatment: Scaling and Root Planing

For early stages of gum disease, scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) are often the first treatments recommended. This process removes tartar and plaque from below the gum line and smooths the root surfaces to encourage reattachment of the gums.

3- Surgical Treatments

If gum disease has progressed, surgical treatments like gum grafts, flap surgery, or bone grafts may be necessary to restore gum and bone health. These procedures aim to rebuild or reshape the gum tissues and promote healing.

4- Maintenance and Prevention

Once the gums are healthy, regular checkups and cleanings are essential to maintain the results. Your periodontist will provide you with instructions on how to care for your gums at home and prevent further issues.
